Site Lines

Talking Architecture in the Subcontinent

15-21 March 2026 | IFBE, Mumbai

Site Lines is a project that addresses the need for critical dialogue, which confronts the multiple challenges of our contemporary times. The project focuses on architectural practice and its ecology of production and representation by engaging voices from the field and allied disciplines. The constellation of events hopes to enable critical thinking to support emerging architectural production.

This project takes forward The State of Architecture: Practices and Processes in India exhibition, curated by Kaiwan Mehta, Ranjit Hoskote and Rahul Mehrotra, which was held at NGMA Mumbai in 2016. In the past ten years, the Architecture Foundation has continued to pursue questions in practice across changing contexts, both within India and across the subcontinent, through projects like State of Housing: Aspirations, Imaginaries and Realities in India in 2018 — a research-oriented exhibition that focused on the complexity of the housing question in India.

In 2021, at the Harvard GSD with the support of the Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute, Rahul Mehrotra, along with Devashree Shah and Pranav Thole, expanded on the concerns raised in the 2016 exhibition to look at the larger region of South Asia — India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan. This project, The State of Architecture in South Asia, examined the challenges and possibilities that arise for the practice of architecture in the context of the transitions that the region is currently experiencing.

At the end of the decade since 2016, the Architecture Foundation is convening the following series of events under the constellation Site Lines: Talking Architecture in the Subcontinent from March 15 – 21, 2026 at IFBE, Mumbai.
